The detailed multi-step fabrication process of creating a bronze sculpture is delicate, even takes several months and years to finish a high quality one. From the beginning process of developing an artistic idea, to mini clay model, and the final chiseling, chasing and sawing, a high quality bronze sculpture is a piece of artwork that can be persevered for generations.
At the beginning, sculptor start with an idea, which would be a picture, a reference or other’s suggestion. The sculptor is in charge of developing the idea and turning it into reality. Once the idea is preliminary designed and confirmed, they would use oil-based clay designed for sculptors. The beginning sculptures cast can also be sculpted using stoneware ceramic or sculpture wax. The original wax creation may take weeks or even months to tweak.
When the original city sculpture is finally completed, the next step involves making a flexible silicone rubber mold so the mold can be reproduced in a wax material. After the mold has been completed, stripped off the original model and cleaned, a special molten sculpture wax is poured into the sculpture, until there is a layer of the wax about a quarter of an inch built up within the mold. After the piece is cool enough to handle, artisans use chisels to knock dirt and spurs off the freshly solidified metal and sandblast the fines from the bronze.
Once the bronze carving arrives at the metal foundry, artisans would usually starts with large electric or pneumatic grinders to remove the bulk of the unwanted metal. Then, applying more refined and smaller tools such as die and pencil grinders to re-create the subtle surface texture. Finally finishing touches are added to the completed sculpture, and the whole Bronze carving customization is finished.
