Busts are usually carved to memorize our cherished persons, so we work closely with our clients throughout the process of creating our custom sculptures. Here we share the fabrication process of imitation bronze busts, which is actually made of fiberglass, hand sculpted entirely from photos and cast in lightweight resin that looks like bronze without the weight and cost of the real metal.
A faux bronze approach allowed our clients to get the most out of their budget. Rather than using actual bronze, each of these busts is cast in a resin material that’s finished with a realistic bronze style look. These keeps both the weight of the pieces and the ultimate cost down, as we ll as a great option for business or personal commissions.
Each life-sized tribute custom Busts firstly made of water based clay. This process generally takes a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the likeness and the level of details required in the sculpt. Once the sculpture was completed in water based clay, our clients approved the custom bronze sculpture and we moved on to the process of molding in silicone for reproduction in a resin material.
Once the human statue were finished and approved by our client, we moved on to the molding process. This is where we capture the fragile clay sculpture in silicone and plaster. With the negative molds created from each, we were able to cast the finished sculptures in a durable resin material, which is a bit like fiberglass.
From the mold, a resin casting was then cast and hand finished with a faux bronze surface. Where real bronze is ideal for outdoor display, our faux bronze resin busts are wonderful for indoor displays, or for those where budget or weight are concerns. It’s always a pleasure to create a unique piece of artwork for someone as the ultimate gift! A laminated black wood base was created for each, and the finishing touch was a plaque with the honoree’s names and dates of birth and passing.
